The Queen of hip hop and R&B Mary J. Blige. We wanted to do a shot of Mary that made her look regal. We decided to rent a freezer for four hours and have an ice sculptor carve out a thrown for her to sit in. Well Mary, decided to show up with ten minutes left at the location without any hair or make-up done and not in a very good mood. I had to immediately get her calmed down, bribe the connected Italian owner of the freezer with an extra five hundred dollars to let us go over ten minutes, throw a hat on her and sit her down for ten shots. I was shooting in 4x5 so I didn't have that much room for error. Well, it turned out to be one of Mary's favorite photographs and the two of us will always be connected. October 1994
